Who it suits

It is usually bought for daily personal use and anyone who wants current hardware without a contract.

Background

A phone is the device most people replace least often and use most, so the specification that matters is the one you will still be happy with in two or three years — storage and battery far more than headline processor speed. Against the other 407 smartphones we list, this one sits towards the upper end of the range at R18 916, with most falling between R249 and R23 389.

Points to check

• Look at the specification you will still care about in two years, not only the one that matters this week.
• Read the specification rather than the headline — the number in the title is rarely the one that decides the fit.
• Where a listing offers several configurations, the difference is usually memory or storage rather than the core hardware.
