Who this is for

It is a sensible fit for work and study and anyone replacing an ageing laptop.

Some context

A laptop is a set of compromises between speed, battery life, weight and screen size. There is no configuration that wins on all four, so the useful question is which of them you are willing to give up. Against the other 4140 laptops we list, this one sits towards the affordable end of the range at R209, with most falling between R3 619 and R41 862.

Worth checking

• Match the processor to the work: light office and browsing needs far less than video editing or compiling.
• Check the port selection against what you actually plug in, and whether you will need a hub on top.
• Screen size drives portability more than weight does. A 16-inch machine is a desk machine in practice.
• Check the exact model and variant against what you own before ordering, as compatibility is usually model-specific.
• Read the specification rather than the headline — the number in the title is rarely the one that decides the fit.
