Worth knowing

Running cost matters more than purchase price on printers. The cartridge or toner economics over a few years usually dwarf the difference between two models on the shelf. Against the other 1656 printers we list, this one sits around the middle of the range at R2 764, with most falling between R1 244 and R22 382.

Before you order

• Where a listing offers several configurations, the difference is usually memory or storage rather than the core hardware.
• Look at the specification you will still care about in two years, not only the one that matters this week.
• If this is replacing something you already own, check the two are actually compatible rather than assuming.
• Check what is included in the box, as bundled cables and adapters vary between models and regions.
• Compare this against the other options in the range before deciding, since the closest alternative is often a better fit.
