A good fit for

This laptop suits people who need a portable main machine and anyone replacing an ageing laptop.

How to think about it

A laptop is a set of compromises between speed, battery life, weight and screen size. There is no configuration that wins on all four, so the useful question is which of them you are willing to give up. Against the other 4139 laptops we list, this one sits towards the affordable end of the range at R8 325, with most falling between R3 609 and R41 862.

What to confirm

• Screen size drives portability more than weight does. A 16-inch machine is a desk machine in practice.
• Read the specification rather than the headline — the number in the title is rarely the one that decides the fit.
• Confirm the variant matches the one you need; near-identical model codes often differ in one specification that matters.
• Check what is included in the box, as bundled cables and adapters vary between models and regions.
• Look at the specification you will still care about in two years, not only the one that matters this week.
