A good fit for

This laptop suits people who need a portable main machine and anyone replacing an ageing laptop.

How to think about it

A laptop is a set of compromises between speed, battery life, weight and screen size. There is no configuration that wins on all four, so the useful question is which of them you are willing to give up. Against the other 4139 laptops we list, this one sits towards the upper end of the range at R40 826, with most falling between R3 609 and R41 862.

What to confirm

• Look at the specification you will still care about in two years, not only the one that matters this week.
• Memory is the specification most people under-buy. It is also the hardest to change later on thin machines where it is soldered.
• Check the port selection against what you actually plug in, and whether you will need a hub on top.
