Who it suits

It is usually bought for anyone replacing an ageing laptop and people who need a portable main machine with a larger screen.

Background

A laptop is a set of compromises between speed, battery life, weight and screen size. There is no configuration that wins on all four, so the useful question is which of them you are willing to give up. Against the other 4139 laptops we list, this one sits around the middle of the range at R17 200, with most falling between R3 609 and R41 862.

Points to check

• Memory is the specification most people under-buy. It is also the hardest to change later on thin machines where it is soldered.
• Screen size drives portability more than weight does. The 15-inch Air is noticeably less pocketable than the 13-inch.
• Confirm the variant matches the one you need; near-identical model codes often differ in one specification that matters.
